about

Jonkershoek for organ and live electronics is composed differently for each organ it is performed on and the space that it is performed in. This version of Jonkershoek was composed for the Nicolaïkerk in Utrecht. The composition process started with a recording session in the church and was continued by editing and transforming the recordings in studio, composing the score for the organist to play and then meeting in the church to play through the score again. For the composition in the Nicolaïkerk, this process was repeated four times at multiple sessions between March and September 2021. The initial score started off as sketches and after the fourth session the score was completed and rehearsed. In between the sessions, the part for electronics was developed and consisted of various generations of transformations of the same starter material that went through various phases of recording.

By working closely with Francesca Ajossa I could get to know her style and technique of musical expression. At our first session I asked her to demonstrate music she regularly performs and she played Durufle’s Prélude et fugue sur le nom d’Alain and the 4th movement from Widor’s Symphony no. 6. I recorded this and the initial sketches I made were transformations of this material.

The music is named after the Jonkershoek nature reserve in the Western Cape, South Africa, where there are mountains and tall gorges. These large acoustic spaces are like the tall arches found in the church. There are also smaller tucked away corners carved through by waterfalls. Similarly, in the Nicolaïkerk, there is a small passage that leads up to the organ where the bass finds its resonance.
