about

Please listen with high quality headphones or decent speakers.

Bakoor is the first composition that engages audio recordings made during the residency, Sonic Mmabolela, just south of the Limpopo River, South Africa. This particular recording was made at roughly 3am in the 'bushveld', an area that is not surrounded by water, but rather a plain covered with bushes and trees. The recording is made up of simple sound objects: crickets repeating roughly four different pitches, an insect that scratches in the high range on a repeated rhythm, and different birds such as the nightingale and piet my vrou that sing every now and then. There is not much action at this time of the morning, but this is when nocturnal animals such as the Bat-Eared Fox (Bakoor) are probably done finding their food and are relaxing at the den. The sound objects were notated into various melodic lines that are then orchestrated for voice. The voice parts were recorded prior to performance at Sacchi Studios. These are then played-backed as rhythmical patterns that imitate that of the action heard in the recording.
